My friend and I went to the Deerfoot Meadows location on a Monday so it wasn’t too busy…perfect for catching up over burgers! I ordered a regular HAMBURGER ($6.49) and my friend ordered a CHEESEBURGER ($7.49). With soooo many toppings to choose from, we decided to keep it simple by asking for all of them! Mmmmmm beefy goodness…
We also shared an order of the regular CAJUN FRIES ($3.49). Good thing we shared because we only ate about half of it! The cajun spices were a nice change from regular fries and didn’t require any ketchup.
I had a great time swapping stories over burgers!

For Chinese New Year, papachef taught me how to make 年糕 (sweet rice cake). I loooooooove this dish!
I need to work on getting rid of those bumpy eyesores…especially if I plan on being the sole 年糕 maker for my family next year!
I wish everyone a healthy and prosperous year of the dragon!
Nothing beats catching up with an old friend over a lovely cup of MATCHA TEA LATTE ($4.49).
I need a huge thermos of this to get me through the -40C weather for the next couple of days…

One of my resolutions this year is to become a better cook and so what better way to document my progress than on this blog?! With my dad as my mentor, I hope I can master a solid number of dishes this year!
FIRST UP: SZECHUAN NOODLES
The first few times I made SZECHUAN NOODLES were disappointing. It was always too bland, not spicy enough, too light in color, blah blah blah. I’m not going to lie, I have high expectations and even if one thing is off, I consider it a failure. Thankfully, I have an awesome support group at my dad’s restaurant who are willing to eat my mistakes while encouraging me to improve.
LESSON LEARNED: practice makes perfect
I’m proud to say last night papachef complimented me on the SZECHUAN NOODLES I made for staff dinner!
In a bright yellow house, just off of 4th street, is a bakery full of wonderful treats! My friend Fiona introduced me to Yann’s last summer and has become my to-go place for macarons.
They always have around a dozen flavors regular flavors along with seasonal specials every so often! At about $1.75 per macaron, it can be an expensive treat, but once it hits your mouth, you realize it’s allllll worth it.
Here are three of my favorites (from top to bottom): apricot lavender, grand-marnier orange, and rose lychee.

I can’t remember the name of this restaurant but it was featured on BEST THING I EVER ATE: IN A BOWL!
I ordered a BEEF NOODLE SOUP made with knife-cut noodles. I’ve never had this type before so was super excited to try!

It did not disappoint. You can see how each noodle is a different size and shape! Apparently this technique is really hard to learn since you have to cut the dough fast yet control the thickness of the noodle. This bowl of delicious-ness was less than $5USD and VERY filling…GREAT VALUE!
After battling our way to get cheap broadway tickets, we were famished and the closest thing was SOUL DADDY!

I had a pulled pork sandwich with yam and coleslaw sides.

My friend had quinoa salad with kale and green bean sides.

We split a cornbread waffle.

VERY good value here. We spent around $18USD with leftovers for later!
The name of this bubbletea chain is super fitting because their drinks KICK ASS!

Best milk tea bubbletea I’ve had to date.

I miss it soooo much ):
One of my most memorable meals in NYC!

We ordered a bunch of dishes to share, staring with GRILLED SCALLOPS!

ODEN warmed us up…

With PORK KATSU and GRILLED MACKEREL as our mains.

Complimentary COTTON CANDY at the end that you make yourself!
